Tom Knapp: Boot Boortz?

Boot Boortz?

Tom Knapp sums up the case for keeping Neal Boortz out of the spotlight at the 2004 convention, simply and clearly.

Hello fellow libertarians,

I thought that I'd chime in with some comments and opinions about Neal. A little background on myself. I have been a libertarian for over 25 years and a registered LP member since 1979. I guess I could best describe myself as a libertarian/objectivist.

Do I think our military intervention in Iraq is necessarily a great move. No. Would I rather we had the opportunity to approach this problem differently. Of course. The problem is, we are already there militarily. Not for one minute do I regret seeing Hussain fall. Would I rather have seen that happen internally through the actions of Iraq without our help. Hell yes I would have.

Now to Neal Boortz. Neal is a libertarian, and yes, he diverges from libertarian thought on the issue of Iraq, but in no way should that be construed as he being a Republican in Libertarian clothing. That is patently false. Neal has given scathing criticism to Mr. Bush on several fronts, and has roundly criticized the GOP and conservatives on many major issues. Hell, he was the only well known commentator to have the guts to say that Mr. Bush's administration has been a failure, and if it were not for the war on terror, we'd be better off under Clinton. He roundly criticized the Bush administration for its growth of government and discretionary spending. He destests the forces of the Christian Coalition and their influence. He criticized Judge Moore for his biblical fire and brimstone rage over the 10 commandments. Mr. Boortz defends a woman's right to choose, he is against prayer in public schools, he supports privatizing education and eliminating the DoE. He is vehemently against the War on Drugs, and he has, regardless of what people here say, spoken out against the Patriot Act on many occasions. He also is a critic of John Ashcroft, like most libertarians.

Mr. Boortz has done much for libertarians, he has promoted the LP on his web site. He says on his site, "I firmly believe that if liberty is to be preserved in America, it will be libertarian thought, if not the Libertarian Party, that saves it. " That is a pretty damned strong endorsement.

These Carol Moore types is what turns people off of the LP. Libertarians are supposed to be logical minded, non-emotion driven people, who use reason, objectivity, and logic to debate and arrive at conclusions. She uses emotional screed and foul language to try to make her points. Hell, she acts more like a liberal socialist then a libertarian. I know that is not the case, I know she is a strong supporter of free markets and limited govenrment, but she does herself a disservice along with our party by her antics.

Neal is one of the only commentators who realizes that our freedoms are under attack by politicians and beauracrats. He is the only one that speaks up about the growing problems of the abuse of eminent domain. He says that this is an issue that we libertarians and the LP should take up as a banner issue, and a defining issue. It will resonate loud and clear with the majority of Americans. I imagine that he will address this issue. Have you all been following Neal' addressing of this vital issue? He has taken both Republicans and Democrats to task on eminent domain abuse. Folks, you are all focusing on a single issue when criticising Mr. Boortz. REad his FAQ section, read his entire site, before you state that he is not a real libertarian. He is, and he has done much for the LP, for free btw. He has given candidates airtime (including Harry Browne), has promoted the LP, and has brought libertarian perspectives to a lot of listeners.

Listen, I respect Mr. Knapp, Lance Brown, Carol Moore, and Justin Raimondo. Justin is an excellent writer, and he has been consistent over the years. He has roundly criticized Democrats and Republicans alike, along with Clinton, Hillarycare and other socialist leaning issues. I respect his stand on principle, although I disagree with his opinion of Neal. I hope that soon we libertarians can get beyond all of this and work towards something that we all agree with - the elimination of big intrusive government, elimination of the income tax, ending of the War on Drugs, and the dismantling of the caretaker state.

For further commentary on what I believe is important for the LP and we as libertarians, do me a favor and read one of my published articles. I know, it sounds crass, but I think I address some important issues. This article was published by Sierra Times and is carried at the libertarian website, Libertarian Undergound
