RVers who are spoiling a good thing
RVers who "camp" long term in Wal-Mart parking lots are ruining the privilege for the rest of us.
By Chuck Woodbury, editor
FreeCampgrounds.com
A woman just wrote to me boasting of how she stays overnight in her motorhome at one Wal-Mart parking lot after another, usually for a few days at a time. At one store, she said, she met a couple that "had been there for two months."
Two months! I was horrified!
...
Wal-Mart, founded by an RVer named Sam Walton, as corporate policy, allows RVers in self-contained units to spend a free night in its parking lots. There are no formal rules and regulations — only informal ones like "blend in, make no noise, don't pull out awnings and barbecue grills, and don't leave behind any trash."
It's understood by 99% of all RVers that Wal-Marts are not campgrounds. They are retail stores with big parking lots with management kind enough to let RVers stay the night when they are in need of some sleep and have nowhere else to go. But that other one percent is basically comprised of ignorant freeloaders, who possess no common sense and who will eventually blow the opportunity for a free stay for the rest of us.
...
The woman who wrote me today seemed to think the freeloading slobs she met were to be admired. I guess you can figure out what I think.

Excerpts:
The fire began at around 5 p.m. and was under control in less than 20 minutes, according to Mount Shasta Fire District Chief Clyde Davis. However, the vehicle was fully involved very quickly, and only a few personal effects could be salvaged. The fire also spread beyond the vehicle, burning a small amount of vegetation.
...
Davis said the preliminary investigation revealed the fire was caused when the driver "pushed the vehicle really hard up the grade," which loaded up the engine's filters with oil, causing the smog pump to explode and spread oil over the engine.
"There are quite a few motorhome fires in this area because of the steep grades the vehicles have to come up," Davis said. "People try to get more out of their vehicles than they can give."

It's not often one hears about something cool that Walmart does, but once I started looking into the RV lifestyle, I soon found out that Walmart has a company-wide policy of allowing RVers to spend a night in a store parking lot for free. It seems that Walmart founder Sam Walton was a big RVer, and the policy was his doing. Very cool.
Apparently some in Whitehorse, Yukon, don't see it as I do.
Particularly this whiner:
After the councillors spoke about Preston’s report, RV park owner Chuck MacKenzie stood up and said now that he sees where council is going on this issue, he wants a refund for 16 years’ worth of city taxes and business licences because the city is not doing its job right.
“I would like a cheque Monday morning,” he said before sitting.
City can’t curtail RV parking, lawyer says
by Jason Small
A Whitehorse Star Archive story originally published August 20, 2003
If the city wants to prevent RVs from camping in Wal-Mart’s parking lot without the store’s permission, it will have to get the territorial government to change a law.
Local lawyer Tim Preston told city council at last night’s meeting that the only way it could prevent people from parking overnight at Wal-Mart without a request by the store to do so would be to ask the territorial government to change the Motor Vehicles Act.
