Howard Dean, Drug Warrior

I'll be writing about this in the midst of writing about the Democrats soon, probably on my main blog.

I'm very disappointed to find out that Howard Dean is firmly in support of the War on Drugs. He's spoken against medical marijuana as well, as you'll see in the next story I post here.

This one is from On The Issues, and has his position as defined by the National Governors Association policy:

Howard Dean on Drugs

Howard Dean on Drugs

More federal funding for all aspects of Drug War.

Dean has indicated in a couple interviews that while he doesn't support across-the-board legalization of marijuana, he's not opposed to the legalization of medical marijuana if an FDA study supports its use. To quote one interview:

My opposition to medical marijuana is based on science, not based on ideology.

More specifically, I don’t think we should single out a particular drug for approval through political means when we approve other drugs through scientific means.

When I’m President, I will require the FDA to evaluate marijuana with a double blind study with the same kinds of scientific protocols that every other drug goes through.

I’m certainly willing to abide by what the FDA says.

I've seen him hold the same position in other interviews, too.
