August 31, 2003Fire consumes R.V.Excerpts: The fire began at around 5 p.m. and was under control in less than 20 minutes, according to Mount Shasta Fire District Chief Clyde Davis. However, the vehicle was fully involved very quickly, and only a few personal effects could be salvaged. The fire also spread beyond the vehicle, burning a small amount of vegetation. Davis said the preliminary investigation revealed the fire was caused when the driver "pushed the vehicle really hard up the grade," which loaded up the engine's filters with oil, causing the smog pump to explode and spread oil over the engine. "There are quite a few motorhome fires in this area because of the steep grades the vehicles have to come up," Davis said. "People try to get more out of their vehicles than they can give."
